Given the inexorable rise of oil burners over the past decade it is a surprise to discover that in terms of fast, affordable diesel hatchbacks, the new Seat Ibiza FR TDI really is the only show in town at the moment. Bring any of the cars current competitors to mind (Fiesta, Corsa, Mito, Punto, 207, Fabia, Polo etc) and all lag some way behind the Ibiza's power.

The FR's superiority is thanks to the new 2.0-litre TDI engine Seat has wedged under the bonnet. The turbo diesel produces 140bhp, but the headline figure is the torque; 236lb ft between 1750 and 2500rpm. These figures mean the Ibiza is not only quicker than the previous model, but also comfortably faster than anything else in its segment.

And thanks to common rail technology, the new engine is also more economical and has lower emissions. Seat claims the FR is capable of 64mpg, while CO2 emissions of just 119g/km means the Ibiza costs just £35 a year in tax. Even the insurance is cheap.

This is the diesel version of SEAT's edgy-looking Ibiza FR, a warmed-up performance hatchback with a 2.0-litre TDI engine and more torque than a Porsche Cayman.

Rather than the sort of screaming high-revs persona we usually associate with conventional hot hatches, the diesel FR uses large swells of mid-range shove to thrust down the road. It'll do 0-62mph in a respectable 8.2 seconds but because it doesn't wail like a petrol hot hatch, and you don't thrash it until the valves pop out, it never really feels that fast. In fact it drives a bit like a tiny torque-laden grand tourer.

We proved as much on a bumpy Suffolk road, where the lack of real visceral thrill meant we were going quicker than usual and attracted the attention of a disgruntled copper who decided to offer some words of advice (or maybe he just wanted to look at the shiny new car?) after spotting us making progress around his county.

It hasn't taken long, but the new Seat Ibiza ST's looks have actually grown on us a bit.

OK, so it is not as stylish as the Audi A3 Sportback the Seat guys have spoken of in the same sentence as their new car (in terms of looking like a big hatchback rather than a box-on-wheels, not as a direct rival) but it is not as dull as it appeared in last night's rain.

Seat marks a quarter of a century since sales began in the UK this month with some pictures celebrating its recent history.

It sold 24 cars in September 1985, but now boasts nearly 500,000 sales and established a 1.6% share of the market.

The Spanish company had recently split from Italian co-owner Fiat, and brought its first independently-produced car, the mk1 Ibiza to British shores. In 1986 it was bought up by Volkswagen, and sales surged to heady highs of 10,000 by 1988.
