HGVs face fast lane ban

February 3rd, 2010

The government is considering changing the law to prohibit all HGVs from using the fast lanes of motorways, and restricting their speed to 60mph.

The Department of Transport claims that the traffic laws must be simplified as there is a disparity between new HGVs that are limited to 56mph electronically, and older vehicles which are still capable of 70mph.

Under current legislation, unrestricted HGVs are permitted to use the outside lane while the newer vehicles are not. The Department of Transport's proposals would end that practice, and set a blanket speed limit of 60mph for all HGVs over 3.5 tonnes.

The Department of Transport claims that the traffic laws must be simplified as there is a disparity between new HGVs that are limited to 56mph electronically, and older vehicles which are still capable of 70mph.

Britain’s motorways are unsafe, says report

January 28th, 2010

A European study into the safety of England's trunk road network has found that half of the country's motorways fail to meet the expected international safety standards.

Despite having the UK having one of the lowest fatality rates in the world, the report, conducted by the Road Safety Foundation, found that two-thirds of single carriageways only rate 2-stars while 78 per cent of the dual carriageway network rated 3-stars.

The star rating system is a new approach by authorities to make road infrastructure safer. The Road Protection Score is determined by how well the design of a road protects users from death or injury in the event of an accident.

Average speed cameras could feature on all motorways

January 25th, 2010

A government watchdog has called on ministers to install average speed cameras on every motorway throughout the country in an attempt to cut vehicle emissions.

The Sustainable Development Commission claims that motorists sticking to the 70mph national speed limit will result in a reduction of 1.4million tonnes of carbon dioxide. The Commission also says that Department for Transport data shows that 52% of drivers currently do not obey the speed limit laws.

As well as encouraging environmentally-friendly driving, the Commission insists the average speed cameras would result in safer roads as drivers would not jam on their brakes in the same way they do for individual cameras.
