Stop crying so much. That was the message to the chief executive of Toyota
from one of his shareholders yesterday.

Toyota has bounced back from the recall crisis that engulfed the carmaker by
posting an annual profit.

The head of Toyota was handed a stark warning just over three years ago of
significant problems with the safety of a number of models as the result of
cost-cutting and the use of temporary workers.

Akio Toyoda has flown to Beijing to apologise for the carmaker’s recall of
vehicles, despite less than 10pc of the recall involving Chinese cars.

Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s chief executive, was accused of placing profit ahead of
safety and of being “safety deaf” during a series of exchanges
with senior US politicians.
