Silverstone will use its new 'Arena' circuit for this year's British Grand Prix in a bid to improve overtaking opportunities.

The new layout introduces a series of new bends after Abbey corner, before rejoining the main track at Brooklands. The changes to the track have cost around £5m, and are due to be completed in March.

The new part of the track had already been earmarked for use for Moto GP but it was still waiting for approval from F1 bosses. Silverstone is also benefitting from numerous other upgrades including new viewing banks and bringing existing grandstands forwards so spectators are closer to the action.

The circuit will also get a new pit and paddock complex by summer 2011 which will be located between Club and Abbey corners.

The new track configuration is the first stage of improvements at the circuit after it agreed a 17-year deal to host the British round of the Formula One World Championship.
