Flat-chested bikers banned

November 5th, 2008

Did anyone else see that bizarre little snippet in the news last week about small-chested bikers in Vietnam? The government there has recommended that people with chests smaller than 28 inches are banned from riding motorbikes and mopeds on the grounds that they won't be in good health... those too short or too skinny should also be stopped from riding, apparently.

Actually, maybe they've got a point on the short and skinny side. Unless you're that amazing short Ducati tester, it's blooming hard riding bikes when you can't get your feet on the ground and being very weedy on top myself, I've never been able to pick up any of the bikes I've dropped.

I know - there''s lots of footage out there on the web of that small wiry woman in American who can pick up any bike, BMW and Honda tourers included. She uses that technique of backing into the bike, bending at the kness with one hand below seat and one on handlebar, and then walking it upright. I've seen it and I've tried - I even had the presence of mind to try it when I crashed the Harley - but it doesn't work for me.
